ORDER OF WORSHIP

PRELUDE Fairest Lord Jesus Played by Joseph Bush

on the Union Church Piano

CALL TO WORSHIP Adapted from Psalm 146

Leader: Praise the LORD! Praise the LORD, O my soul! PEOPLE: I will praise the LORD as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God all my life long. Leader: Do not put your trust in princes, in mortals, in whom there is no help. PEOPLE: When their breath departs, they return to the earth; on that very day their plans perish. Leader: Happy are those whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the LORD their God, PEOPLE: who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them; who keeps faith forever; Leader: The LORD watches over the strangers; he upholds the orphan and the widow, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. PEOPLE: The LORD will reign forever, your God, O Zion, for all generations. Praise the LORD!

INVOCATION

Dear Lord, as we come before you in worship, clear our minds of distraction and open our hearts to your message of love and grace and deliverance. Give us peace in your eyes as we look to new days of peace, in the name of Jesus, Amen.

CALL TO CONFESSION

Try as we may, we still fail, we still fall. But God always lifts us up again and points us on our way to a better pathway in life. Let us confess our sins together.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of active love, we confess our tendency to pay lip-service to your Gospel to be hearers of your word but only reluctantly doers. Forgive us our o0wn lethargy and sow in us a deep discontent with a faith that is all talk and no action. Empower us, oh Lord, to put our efforts where our claims are, after the model and message of Jesus, in whose name we pray.

(A moment for silent personal confession)

ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS

Friends in faith, know that by our collective and personal confessions that God hears us and listens to us, and by the grace of Jesus we are forgiven. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Since we do not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from your mouth, make us hunger for this heavenly food, that it may nourish us today in the ways of eternal life; through Jesus Christ, the bread of heaven. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER

Father of us all, we come to you today to seek your holy wisdom in watching over those in tremendous need. To those on the Gulf Coast struggling to recover from the latest hurricane. For those ravaged by Covid and trying to recover, even after dreadful side effects will plague them for a lifetime. We pray for those who have passed from us from this pandemic disease and from the countless other maladies that hover over us. And we ask for your healing touch on those we name here:

Gracious God, keep in our hearts all those whose names you already know and who ask for healing in their own quiet ways, and let us join to pray as Jesus taught us, saying:

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
