WELCOME AND ANNOUNCEMENTS
CALL TO WORSHIP (Adapted from Psalm 104)
Leader: Bless the Lord, O my soul. O Lord my God, you are very great.
PEOPLE: You are clothed with honor and majesty, wrapped in light as with a garment. You stretch out the heavens like a tent,
Leader: You set the beams of your chambers on the waters, you make the clouds your chariot, you ride on the wings of the wind,
PEOPLE: You make the winds your messengers, fire and flame your ministers.
Leader: You set the earth on its foundations, so that it shall never be shaken.
PEOPLE: You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills,
Leader: By the streams the birds of the air have their nests; they sing among the branches.
PEOPLE: From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.
INVOCATION
God our Creator, we come together here in this company to give thanks for all that you have provided for us and to make known our devotion to you and all the universe that you oversee, from the time before time to that time in eternity, Amen.
**OPENING HYMN: “Spirit of God, Descend upon My Heart“ Red # 290
CALL TO CONFESSION
We are often blinded by the radiant light of God’s love when we should instead bathe in its warmth as it rises around us. Let us join together in prayer:
PRAYER OF UNDERSTANDING
God of mercy, we live lives of illusion and act in ways that don’t always match your Holy intent. We boast of our deeds and flaunt our behavior in arrogance, while forgetting the damage it causes. Free us from our deceptions and through Jesus make us free. Amen.
(a moment for silent personal confession)
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Despite the damage we cause, the fouling of the earth and its waterways, and the poisons in the very air that we breathe, our Lord yet loves us and forgives us. Amen
**GLORIA PATRI (Avery & Marsh, back cover of the Red Hymnal)
**PASSING OF THE PEACE
**AFFIRMATION OF FAITH -- APOSTLES CREED (Traditional)
I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Ghost, Born of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate, Was crucified, dead, and buried. He descended into hell; The third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, And sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty; From thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead. I believe in the Holy Ghost; The Holy catholic Church, the Communion of Saints; The Forgiveness of sins; The Resurrection of the body, And the Life everlasting. Amen.
**HYMN OF PRAISE “Glorious Things of Thee Are Spoken” Red # 694
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God of mercy, you promised never to break your covenant with us. Amid all the changing words of our generation, speak your eternal Word that does not change. Then may we respond to your gracious promises with faithful and obedient lives; through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & LORDS PRAYER
And Lord we pray for those in our own hearts whose names you already know, for their own healing and comfort, in your name and that of our redeemer Jesus Christ, who taught to pray, saying:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
TITHES AND OFFERINGS
It is right to share our abundance with those who have less or need more. May what we offer here help to be the answer of the prayers of others in the name of Jesus, Amen.
OFFERTORY “We Give Thee but Thine Own”
**DOXOLOGY Traditional
** PRAYER OF THANKS
Gracious God, accept our gifts that they may be used wisely in your service for those who hunger, or thirst, or merely seek a greater understanding of your love. This we gratefully pray in Jesus’ name, Amen.
HYMN OF PARTING “Now Thank We All Our God” Red # 374
BENEDICTION
POSTLUDE “Our God Our Help in Ages Past” Mary Lee Farris, Piano
Candles in Our Worship Service A bit of History: The seven-light candelabra are symbolic of the seven days of the week, meaning we ‘worship’ God every day, not just on Sunday. The two altar candles symbolize that Jesus is both God and Man, and the Christ candle is symbolic of Christ being the Light of the World.
The Christ candle is lit first and extinguished last. The ushers leave its light with the other candles during worship, and when extinguished after worship, the ushers carry the light out into the world.
The reason the Christ candle is larger and placed by the pulpit, is that in the past, it also provided light for reading!
Blessings! JTR
