CALL TO WORSHIP from Psalms 107 in The Message by Eugene Peterson
Leader: Oh, thank God—God is so good!
People: God’s love never runs out.
Leader: God set all of us free, tell the world!
People: God freed us from oppression,
Leader: Then rounded us up from all over the place,
from the four winds, from the seven seas.
People: Our Triune God claimed all of their children.
All: When the people gather, lift high your praises ,
And shout Hallelujah!
INVOCATION
Creating God; Redeeming God; Welcoming God; Loving God; Grace-Filled God; as people gathered in your love, we celebrate your presence here, You make us; You create us; You shape us; we are yours, we are yours. Amen.
CALL TO CONFESSION
I crawled out of bed this morning and had done no wrong. I had nothing to confess.
But Lord, that was at least two hours ago, and I have already sinned against God and neighbor. We are a sinful people and come to God humbly seeking God’s forgiveness.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Almighty God, we have an unhealthy need to be better than someone else. Our egos constantly need to be fed; we need to feel better about ourselves. Often we recognize and control these urges, but too often, we act on them and in the process hurt our neighbors. We step on others in order to get ahead. We ridicule others because in some perverse way it makes us feel better about ourselves.
Help us recognize others as equals, not as enemies nor as beings superior to ourselves, but as individuals in Christ waiting to be experienced. A person we are free to know and love without fear of ourselves being diminished or intimidated. As we are forgiven by our neighbors, we seek the forgiveness of our Savior and Lord. Amen.
(A moment for silent personal confession)
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
Hear the good news. Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation. The old life has gone; a new life has begun. Know that you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen.
GLORIA PATRI Traditional, Second Century
CREED from the Confession of Belhar, a creed from South Africa. It was added to the Presbyterian Book of Confessions in 2016.
We believe
That Christ’s work of reconciliation is made manifest in the church as the community of believers who have been reconciled with God and with one another.
That this unity must become visible so that the world may believe that separation, enmity and hatred between people and groups is sin which Christ has already conquered and accordingly that anything which threatens this unity may have no place in the church and must be resisted.
That true faith in Jesus Christ is the only condition for membership of this church.
We believe that, in obedience to Jesus Christ, its only head, the church is called to confess and to do all these things, even though the authorities and human laws might forbid them and punishment and suffering be the consequence.
Jesus is Lord.
To the one and only God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit be the honor and the glory for ever and ever. Amen.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE & THE LORD’S PRAYER
As God's people, called to love one another, let us pray for the needs of the church, the whole human family and all the world. We pray that the earth may be freed from wars in the Holy Lands of Israel and Palestine; from famine in Sub Saharan Africa, Syria and Yemen; and disease, especially the virus Covid-19.
We pray that you will strengthen this nation and Your churches to pursue just priorities so that those who are different and the light-skinned, heterosexual majority may be reconciled; the young, educated; the old cared for; the homeless, housed; and the sick, comforted and healed, especially
Merciful God, as you calmed the waters of chaos and as your Son, Jesus, stilled the waters of the storm, calm and still our souls and open our hearts to more fully love those around us until we pray as continually as we breath and all our acts are prayer; through Jesus Christ and in the mystery of the Holy Spirit, we pray as Jesus taught his disciples, saying:
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.
Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom, and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
OFFERTORY ANTHEM Abide with Me Union Chancel Choir, 2019
OFFERING OF TITHES AND GIFTS
Do good and share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Grandeur, power, majesty, splendor and glory are Yours, O Lord. All in the heavens and on the earth is yours, and of what you have given us, we return to you. Bless these our offerings that they will do good in this church, this community and where there are needs in this world. Amen.
