About Us

Union Presbyterian Church has been a force in the religious life of Newburgh for over 170 years.   Fifty years ago we moved from the City of Newburgh to our present home in Balmville, NY. We are a diverse and active congregation promoting music, Christian education, community outreach, and spirituality.   We welcome all who enter our doors and we would love to make your acquaintance.

Active church members come from throughout Orange County, primarily from the city and town of Newburgh. Currently there are approximately 250 members.  We are a member of the Hudson River Presbytery that extends from Sullivan County to Yonkers in southern Westchester county.

Union Church welcomes newcomers to experience our church services and programs. We are a strong church family and many families of several generations attend services.

We believe that we are called to serve and worship God, to preach God’s word and to share God’s love with each other, both within the community of Union Church and in the wider community.

God’s call includes an interior as well as an exterior dimension.  We need to foster our own individual spirituality and open our individual relationships with God while developing and using the gifts and talents God has given us.  This will allow us to enlarge our strong community of believers who care for and support each other.  We are at the same time called individually and as a church community to reach out into the wider community to serve and to spread God’s word and love there.

We believe that as a faith community who serves Jesus Christ we are called, as He was, to welcome all people into our congregation who wish to join with us in serving and worshiping Him.  Within our congregation, we differ in our responses to issues of tolerance and diversity.  We believe that God calls us to continue to struggle with these important issues so that we can create a Christian community that serves all of God’s people.

Union's first church, located on the corner of North Water and Clinton Streets, was dedicated on May 1, 1838 (Rev. John Forsyth, pastor). In 1859, the congregation united with the Old School Presbyterians and bought the Colonial Presbyterian Church (located at the corner of First and Montgomery Streets).

The church’s present location is known as “Dunmovin,” the former estate of John Aspinwall.  Located at 44 Balmville Road, the congregation purchased the property in 1957.  The sanctuary had been a music room, containing a Kimball pipe organ, chestnut paneling, and ten Tiffany stained-glass windows.  The Christian Education building was erected in 1966.  The addition houses Fellowship Hall and a Nursery School.  In 1995, a marble columbarium was constructed in the church garden.

Our current pastor, Rev. David Mason, was installed in 2002, and is leading us beyond our 170th anniversary as Union Church.  The 170th Anniversary Celebration continues to remind the members of Union’s rich heritage as Presbyterians in the greater Newburgh area.

Service Schedule

Our service begins at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday. The service features our choirs and is held concurrently for Sunday School of all ages. Nursery care is available during the service.
